Another hardcore missionary type day... I did a bit of the old emailing in the am and then we headed to Anita and John's for lunch. Really nice time with them just chatting and catching up and as ever, avoiding being eaten by her dogs.

Further ace times as evening drew on. Mariaelena came round and we got the chance to chat properly, very cool as we're at kind of a similar place with God at the mo and really encouraging to share all the things He's been releasing us into. Evening then took a slightly less 'spiritual' turn as we watched 'supersize me' with some more friends. Oh so disturbing, think it would have put me off eating rubbish for life if we hadn't had to take the opportunity to make some headway with one of Chris's 5 birthday cakes...

Sunday (oh so behind)

Excellent moments crossing cultural barriers by dancing before the service at Por Venir church, something that people in the church here don't do an awful lot of, so was good times. Also, very pleased that my good Peruvian friend Leila appreciated our shredding of an extremely cheesy film clip that was shown during the service. Beth and I have invented a routine that involves the miming of shedding a single tear followed by the playing of the world's smallest violin. To our delight, the clown in the film not only shed a tear or two, but then whipped out a comically small violin, the 'sweet' music of which he used to regale the audience. Sat at the front of the church and welcomed as the special guests from England, I wasn't quite sure that the good impression we'd made was consistant throughout, as we almost fell of our chairs laughing.

During the afternoon we visited parents of the children who attend the church's Sunday school. Felt really challenged as visiting was probably my least favourite thing to do last time we were here: I find small talk difficult in English and it's really easy to let whoever you are with (peruvian) carry all the conversation. Realising that I really need to rely on God for this and also for hearing words for people- it's not something I can force but just to be aware and listening for God's guidance is important I guess. Neither do I want to force the manner in which things happen, reading Jackie Pullinger for example, is way inspiring but God acts in different ways at different times through His Spirit and He's not to be 'boxed'.*

*Thanks Mike's Mum and Mike for ace advice there!

Saturday

Went back to the dump in the am with some guys from the church youth group who've started going every week. We were asked to get to church at 10, so we left at about 11.30 (love it). The dump is just as nasty as ever, but as Chris pointed out, it seems God is working and things have changed spiritually. The youth group are building up relationships and and within 10 minutes of us wandering round to chat to people when we first got there, a girl had become a Christian! GO GOD!

At lunchtime we were supposed to be meeting up with Ben, a friend ours from uni, out here working for an NGO. He had to come to Trujillo to have a brain scan after being whacked with a chain* but he hadn't got back to us so we figured that he wasn't coming...

The avo took us to Alto Trujillo (the shanty town) to the kids club that used to be one of my favourite bits of the week. Great to see the kids, remember the feeling of horseness u get when trying to shout (in bad spanish) at 60 or so children against the wind and suffer the effects of a pile-on when u make the mistake of shouting 'all the fruits!' when playing 'fruit salad'. Beth peeled the children off one by one and calm was restored.

When we got home we found Ben! Had randomly given him our address a little while before and good thing too as he had been texting me all afternoon to no avail. After chatting to a friendly neighbourhood vigilanty he had managed to work out which house the address actually referred to (house numbers here don't signify much) and was hanging with our Peruvian mum, Maria. Very good times were had as we had dinner with my friend Mariaelena and headed to my old youth cell. Peruvian cell groups always begin with several games of varying degrees of ridiculousness and generally entailing forfeits- especially easy to fall foul of when you're playing games with tongue twisters and spanish is not your first language. Much to our amusement the forfeits demanded this week were to pretend to be a noodle and then a duck, in time to songs well known by the group that described both objects. Both require a certain amount of wiggling and general embarrassment.

The fun of the day was crowned when Ben walked past the girls bedroom and spotted Betho and I sat on the bed together. The room was quite dark, but it really didn't excuse Ben introducing himself to me thinking that I was another volunteer that he hadn't yet met. Bless that boy.

*He's much better now, but continued prayer for full recovery appreciated!

Today

Hoping to plan vaguely what we’re doing today, vaguely because we want to leave things up to God’s guidance- as to where we go and who we do things with, but we’d like to hold some events linked with the church in the shanty town that we can invite people to. Also will be cool to be able to tell our mates here when we’re free to meet up. Think I managed to tell someone yesterday that I like fairground rides, oh dear. I really don’t, look out for a comical blog on that…

Beth makes progress in Spanish

Our Peruvian Mum, Maria, left us a note on the first morning we were here and I am delighted to present Beth's beautiful tranlation of the afore-mentioned. It really captures the essence of what wasn't actually said.

Chicos, nos fuimos de paseo,
Little crisps (Peruvian sweetie pie), don’t smoke in the passageway,

Espero que esten bien
The escape route is well established

Si van a salir, por favour
The van is sour, please

Chequear si sus llaves
Leave your cheques

Abre la puerta de la called
Where I am able to open them on the street

Tienen pan, huevos, jugo…
I am a pan, however, in a jugganaut

Para su desayuno.
The para (military) are desperate.

Peru, otra vez!

Wahey! Back in Peru! It was very strange to be back at first, especially with only two others rather than 6, as before, but oh so ace to see people. We arrived on Monday eve, highlights so far include God giving us inspiration for what do to with our time and a shared vision, having huge plates of food put in front of us when we’d just had lunch (it’s the Peruvian way), people laughing when we tell them that Beth doesn’t speak Spanish, Jonathan (10) singing Christian kids songs in duet with me as we walked home and being told I’d put on weight*, he he.

*Not an issue btw!

The return of mother

Who has long been absent from this...um...'fine' page. The other day, we were watching Will Smith being interviewed on T.V. He happened to make a comment about being full of energy all the time and how he couldn't stand not being constantly busy.

Mother, however, cut straight through this perspective with her own pearl of wisdom. \"Ah, you just wait 'til the menopause hits you.\"

And I'm sure he will...

More personal (statement) problems

The day before college restarted for my brother (yesterday) I discovered, to my...surprise, that Iain had not yet started his personal statement. He came into my room to run a couple of starting lines by me:

\"When not staring intently at rocks...\"

\"(Sympathy vote)...\"

\"I'm a compulsive liar. After I became king...\"

It was a long afternoon.

I'm a fan, unlike my brother who will violenty squish them just for existing. But the other night I was a little disturbed to realise that the spider whom I had noticed building a web on my lamp seemed to have shot it's thread straight to my forhead and was whizzing that way accross the great divide of my desk.

Am I spending too much time on the computer?

Ah, the magic of weddings.
