Greenbelt Collage

Questions relating to the new blog

Jack has asked some very good questions relating to my new blog which I'd like to say something about.

"If we click on your link lots, and you therefore get more traffic to your site, will this increase your kudos to prospective clients? (x no of hits per month kind of thing)."

Well, traffic is always a good thing. But the best thing is links, as the more links a site has from different sources the better ranking it will have on Google and other search engines. So if I (or any other blogger for that matter) write or draw something interesting then a link is very much appreciated. And hopefully it will be a two way thing. I'm going to be linking to things I find interesting on the new blog, not just posting cartoons or talking about my activities.

"Also, I was wondering what the financial situation is with the wibsite - given that people such as me benefit disproportionately from it, is there any way we can contribute towards the costs of the vast amounts of bandwidth we're using up?"

Well, thank you for asking. I'm not going to answer that in full now as I do want to have a discussion about the subject, but probably on the bulletin board after e-mailing all the Wibloggers to alert them. I'd like to do that fairly soon but not immediately as I have quite a few things on my plate this week.

New occupation, new business... new blog

Well, it has been a few months since I've posted here. Lots has been happening, mainly to do with my change of occupation from church youthworker to freelance cartoonist.

There's lots to be said about this, but the place where I'm going to be writing the Cartoon Blog from now on is at this location. The new Cartoon Blog is phase one of my new site, CartoonChurch.com, to be launched in early May.

'Why a new site?' I hear you ask. Well, the Wibsite is now a community site rather than my own personal website. It is therefore appropriate that as I am now seeking to make my living from my cartoons I should be doing so as a result of my own endeavours, rather than benefitting from the hard work many people have put in as a contribution to the Wibsite community. That may or may not make sense, I'm not sure.

It will mean some changes to one or two things on the Wibsite, more about which another time, but the main thing is that the Wibsite community and Wiblogs will continue as they are except that (1) they won't be the main place to find my cartoons and (2) my own personal blog will be elsewhere.

This afternoon I am making a renewed attempt to reduce my 1328 folders of stuff down to about 1324 folders. My problem is that I tend to keep everything in case it is useful or perhaps in several centuries time of interest to the British Museum. I'm also trying to be green and reuse and recycle things, but I am coming to the conclusion that downsizing and being green are two opposite ends of the spectrum.

I am pleased to announce that my packing case / trunk will have a happy new life in Swansea. The future is looking bleaker for some of the other items though, so if you can think of a way to take them off my hands please do. Unfortunately (to answer a previous comment) charity shops here don't take electrical goods. And no, we don't recondition goods, we just throw them away and get new ones. Sad but true.

Whilst sorting I am also thinking about my sermon on Sunday. I have to say goodbye, reflect on my time here in Cookham and explain what being 'born again' means all in one go. I'm trying to decide whether 'upgrading' is a helpful illustration or not. Is being 'born again' like installing Life 2.0, an improved version with increased protection from viruses and spyware and less tendency to crash? I suspect not actually. Back to the drawing board.
